Listening to Your Body

It's summertime! Thanks to shorter hemlines and beach bods it's the season when we tend to find ourselves thinking more about how our bodies look and how they measure up. Instead of thinking about how our bodies look, how about we listen to our bodies instead? Our bodies are speaking to us all the time giving us hints about our health and well-being. We just need to tune in.

QUESTIONS TO HELP YOU LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

How is your sleep? Sleep is so important! Sleep deprivation can contribute to several health issues like break outs, weight gain, food cravings, and depression. To help you sleep do your best to sleep at consistent times, keep your room comfortable and cool, exercise regularly, and reduce screen-time right before bed.

What food cravings do you have? Sugar! Salt! Everything! Food cravings are a tool your body uses to tell you it needs something (and no, it's not that chocolate bar hiding in the cupboard). Talk to your health professional or do a little research on what your food cravings actually mean for your body. Be aware that if you are constantly hungry you may actually be thirsty. So drink a glass of water and see if that craving goes away!

How is your mood? On a regular day is your mood pretty consistent? Or are you finding that you are experiencing highs and lows more frequently? Make sure you're getting your rest and when things get overwhelming take a walk outside. Studies show that walking in nature reduces stress and boosts well-being.

How are your evenings? How do you feel towards the end of the day? Do you still have some energy left to enjoy some quiet time or are you already exhausted and wanting to go to bed? Make sure you're getting enough rest, eating well, exercising, and drinking plenty of water. It's amazing how much these four basic things contribute to your energy levels! Also be aware of any food intolerances you may have. If you suspect an intolerance you may want to try an elimination diet. (More on this later!)

It doesn't take a lot of time to pause and reflect on these questions and figure out some small changes you can make to help you take better care of your body. Remember, you don't have to do this alone. If you are making changes and you're still getting the same messages from your body, seek out a health professional!

Be well!
