Family Friendly Autumn Craft: Texture Stones

Autumn is a fun time of year for kids. Everything is changing really quickly and there is so much to notice! This craft is a really fun way to get your kids outside and a good way to keep them busy on a rainy autumn afternoon. And as a bonus, it can be made entirely from found objects and kitchen staples!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • 3/4 cup water

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • Food colouring (optional)

  • Items from nature

DIRECTIONS

  1. First, go on a walk. Tell your kids to look for some small pieces of nature to take home (no bigger than their palm). If your child needs help, look for leaves, needles, the tops of long grasses, or interesting stones.

  1. Next, wait for a rainy day. It's autumn; rain will happen.

  1. Prepare the salt dough by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl.

  1. ​I also used 7 drops of food colouring to make my dough green. If your child wants to do a variety of colours use 1-2 drops of food colouring for each individual ball.

  1. Take small chunks of salt dough, roll them into balls.

  1. Then flatten with the palm of your hand. Don't make them too thin or they will be a little too fragile for tiny hands!

  1. Take one of the objects from your walk, and gently press it down into the clay so an impression is made. (Leaves that have more recently fallen are better as they are less likely to break into the dough.)

  1. Carefully peel the object out of the dough.

  1. The dough can now air dry or be baked. If you choose to bake, see this wikiHow. I chose to set my toaster oven to 180ºF (82ºC) for about 10 minutes. Transferring the impressions to the oven can damage them, so if your little one is attached to how the impression looks I recommend air drying.

  1. After the dough is completely dry, feel free to play or use as decor, but most importantly, enjoy! (If you did bake as per instructed on wikiHow, your oven rack will leave an impression on the back.)
